FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 2, 2013

Canada Defeats the Philippines at the ISF Men`s World Championship

(Auckland, New Zealand) The Canadian Men's National Team improved its record to 2-0 with a 10-0 run-ahead rule win in four innings over the Philippines at the ISF XIII Men's World Championship. Eight different Canadian batters registered hits with four of them knocking in two runs, and the pitching tandem of Sean Cleary (Harbour Main, NL) and Don Scott (Stratford, ON) limited the Philippines to only one hit as Canada cruised to the victory.

In the top of the first inning, the Philippines managed a leadoff infield single to third base and the runner stole second base, but Canadian starting pitcher Cleary retired the next three batters to leave the runner stranded. In the bottom of the frame, Ryan Wolfe (Melbourne, ON) reached on an error by the shortstop and Mathieu Roy (St-Gervais, QC) was safe at first on a great bunt single. Jeff Ellsworth (St. Lawrence, PEI) laid down a bunt of his own that was thrown away at third base, allowing Wolfe to score. Brad Ezekiel (Harbour Main, NL) sacrificed the runners over to second and third before Andy Skelton (Scarborough, ON) singled to right field to push both runners in to score, giving Canada an early 3-0 lead.

After quickly retiring the side in the top of the second, Canada went back to work offensively as Brandon Horn (Waterloo, ON) led off with a single to centerfield and advanced to second on an error by the centerfielder, but was left stranded. The following inning, Scott replaced Cleary in the pitcher`s circle and retired the Filipinos in order, followed by Canada also going down in order to keep the score at 3-0 after three innings of play.

Scott retired the Philippines in order once again in the top of the fourth, and Skelton led off the bottom of the inning with a sharp single to right field. Horn hit a one-out single through the right side of the infield followed by an infield single on a high chopper by pinch-hitter Jason Sanford (Durham, NS) to load the bases. Kevin Schellenberg (Squamish, BC) then lined a two-run single to right-center field to increase Canada`s lead to 5-0. A walk to Wolfe loaded the bases once again, and Ellsworth later hit a two-out, two-run single up the middle, advancing to second on an error by the centerfielder. Ezekiel then drove a pitch to the right-center field gap for a double to score two more runs. After Ezekiel moved up to third on a passed ball, pinch-hitter Ian Fehrman (Townsend, ON) hit a single to right field to score the tenth run of the game as Canada won the game on the run-ahead rule.

Skelton paced Canada with a pair of hits and two runs batted in, while Horn also had two hits. Ellsworth, Ezekiel and Schellenberg all had a hit and two runs batted in, with Roy, Fehrman and Sanford each chipping in with a hit as well. In the pitcher`s circle, Cleary allowed one hit and struck out three in two innings of work to earn the win, while Scott did not allow any hits and struck out three batters in two innings of relief.
