Softball in Paradise - The 1st Golden Oldies World Softball Festival - Hawaii 2013

March 21, 2013

Oahu in Hawaii

Time is running out for you to be part of the Softball action at this year’s Golden Oldies Softball Festival. We are heading to the gorgeous sun baked island of Oahu in Hawaii and are calling all softballers over the age of 35 to come with us. Interest has been high and teams are committing every day…but we don’t want you to miss a place so please read on and then contact us to register your team for 19th - 26th October, 2013.

In this issue we introduce the Golden Oldies brand to the Softball world and update the website information for you all. We let you know about Hawaiian Airlines and their new flight paths, our non-accommodation package on offer and update you on the teams that have entered to date. We feature the team from Alaska, TLC Massage Therapy (something that might be in full demand in Hawaii later this year!).  We have more information on the Festival programme and the latest on the three softball parks being used in October.

Golden Oldies Softball - New Name, Same Game

Softball has now joined the renowned Golden Oldies Sports “stable” alongside Rugby, Cricket, Hockey and Netball. The October event will be the first under the auspices of Golden Oldies Softball, and promises to be a great Festival befitting the Golden Oldies brand.

The Director of the Golden Oldies Softball Festival is Don Meinel who is Hawaii ASA State Commissioner. He advises all games “will be run according to all ASA and ISA regulations”.

Teams are assured of at least 8 games, all of 90 minutes duration.

Festival Programme

Golden Oldies Softball is about the love of the game, the ability for fun on and off the diamonds and an enjoyment of travel to a great destination for friendly competition with like-minded fellow softballers. With that in mind the program that has been designed allows for everyone to enjoy, not only playing softball on excellent diamonds, but the opportunities to experience the ambience of Hawaii and to mix freely with players from all corners of the world.

Arrival and Festival Opening:

19th October - Following your transfer from the International airport to your chosen hotel (see the website for accommodation packages), you have the chance to freshen up before being taken to the Waikiki Shell Beer Garden for the official Opening party – 3 hours of entertainment and mingling with fellow players.

The Games:

20th-24th October - Games are to be played on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday culminating with finals day on Friday. Each team will get to play at each of the three venues over the course of the Festival.

On day one each team will play 2 games in their nominated category so we can ensure teams are evenly matched.

A full range of refreshments will be available at the venues for the duration of the days play.

On Finals day each team will play at least 2 games, the second of which is a “final” and determines the final placing for the Festival. All Finals are played at the Central Ohau Softball Complex so we can all enjoy the action together.

The Activities:

On the non-playing days there are a range of options for teams. There’s a mixture of sun, sea and relaxation for those that want to enjoy their own time or you can take one of the many tourist excursions on offer.

There are myriad of restaurants, shops, sights, sporting activities and world class surf beaches to take in.

The Finale:

Saturday 26th October sees the culmination of the Festival week with a day to relax and take in any sights or shopping you haven’t managed to get done and then in the evening we transfer you from your Hotel to Germaine’s Luau for the Grand Finale – the Golden Oldies prize-giving and closing function.

A substantial buffet meal, some great local entertainment and the presentation of the Golden Oldies Festival trophies, prizes and awards…the ultimate prize being bragging rights until everyone meets again.

Heading home:

All good things have to come to an end and so on Sunday 27th October you will be transferred to the Honolulu International Airport for flights back to where you have come from, or you may choose to extend your stay and enjoy the Islands longer…the choice is yours.

Dedicated Softball Parks

The 2013 Festival will played on three dedicated softball parks –

  • Central Ohau Regional Park
  • Sand Island
  • Koko Head

Each venue will be fully managed by dedicated softball personnel to ensure the smooth running of everything at each venue.

Getting to Hawaii is even easier

It is now easier to get to Hawaii with Hawaiian Airlines flying direct to Hawaii from Auckland, Sydney and Brisbane.

They offer an extensive flight schedule and routing from all around the globe to sunny Hawaii.

For those in the Pacific region, Air New Zealand has now entered into the air wars offering competitive fares to Hawaii. These fares will not last however and so it would pay to act fast!

Non Accommodation Packages

We are now offering a NON ACCOMMODATION package for teams who may have their own accommodation options in Hawaii.

For information go to the Golden Oldies Softball website www.vslsoftball.com and find out how this may be an option for your team – particularly our friends from USA, Canada, and of course Hawaii

Team Profiles

TLC Massage Softball of Juneau, Alaska is excited to be visiting the beautiful Island of Oahu in October. We have chosen to attend the Golden Oldies World Carnival because it looks like the most fun you could have playing softball, partying, meeting and making new friends and fun in the sun all in one week's time. We are a mix of several teams that play each summer here in Juneau. We have a competitive, yet friendly group of over 60 teams that play ball here and this will be a great representation of how much we enjoy playing ball and are friends on and off the field. My husband and I wanted to attend 2 years ago when the festival was to be held in New Zealand, but the timing was not good. We are used to playing in rain, sometimes a few late spring snow showers, this will be wonderful -- fun in the sun!   In the photo you’ll see some of the hardy members of our team wearing our local brewery t-shirts just to show off the wonderful logos of the brews and the glacier behind us shows us in a perfect Alaskan setting. The glacier behind us is the Mendenhall Glacier located 12 miles out of downtown Juneau.
Thanks for the invite, see you in October! Traci Gilmour, TLC Massage
