May 20, 2013

Stevens, PA

The # 20 ranked NY Swashbucklers capped off a 6-0 weekend with a dramatic come from behind victory over the #4 ranked Pennsylvania Power to capture the 12 team Rodney Fox Memorial tournament in Stevens, PA. Wins over the Bedford Rays (4-2), South Carolina Tornadoes (9-2) and Exit Realty (10-0) helped Swash finished the round robin Saturday with a 3-0 record, locking up the # 1 seed heading into the single elimination Sunday.. Paul Algar, Justin Zimmerman and Andy Skelton each picked up a win with Kris Bogach, Steve Mullady, Steve Schwartz and Robert Santiago pacing the offense.

In the Sunday quarterfinals, the Swash bats stayed hot with a 9-0 mercy rule win over RM Kurtz. Paul Algar and Justin Zimmerman combined for the shutout. In the semi-finals, the torrid hitting continued with a 7-3 win over Lancaster. Skelton picked up his second win of the weekend backed by the relief effort of Paul Algar, setting up the championship showdown with PA Power. Swash jumped out to a 3-0 lead through 5 behind 2 RBI's from Andy Skelton (single and HR) and a sac fly from Steve Schwartz. A 3 run rally from Power in the 6th would send the game into extra innings and Power was able to push across 2 runs in the top of the 8th against Algar to take a 5-3 lead. However, a Mike Hoadley 2 run HR in the bottom of the inning tied the game at 5, although Power was able to escape a 1st and 2nd and no outs jam without further damage. After a scoreless 9th by both teams, Power was back at it in the 10th, adding 2 more runs to take a 7-5 into the bottom of the 10th, setting the stage for the dramatics. With 2 outs, runners on first and second, and a 2-1 count, Hoadley blasted his second extra inning homerun of the game, this time a walk-off 3 run shot to cap off the perfect weekend for Swash.

Big weekends offensively from Hoadley, Zimmerman, Josh Horton, Andy Skelton and Mike Bourbakis and the arms of Algar, Zimmerman and Skelton were keys to the weekend. Swash has next weekend off before heading back to Pennsylvania for the first weekend of the Mid-Atlantic Fastpitch Travel League.
