The NY Gremlins opened their 2013 season this past weekend at the North American Fastball Challenge in Jarvis, Ontario capturing the tournament with an undefeated 6-0 record. The tournament featured 5 of the top 6 teams in the current ISC rankings. The highlights are as follows:
Game :# 1 – Pool Play
NY Gremlins 4 Scarborough Force 1
WP – Kirkpatrick LP- Tracy
Bryan Abrey and Travis Wilson both homered for the Gremlins. Matty Roy drove in the other run with a sac fly. Andrew Kirkpatrick went the distance allowing 1 run and striking out 8
Game # 2 – Pool Play
NY Gremlins 8 Hill United 1
WP – Cleary LP- Joseph, Patterson
Nick Mullins and Wayne Laulu both hit homers to pace the Gremlin offense. Tyson Byrne had 3 hits and Andrew Kirkpatrick had 2. Sean Cleary picked up the win striking out 9
Game # 3 – Pool Play
NY Gremlins 10 Jarvis Twins 2
WP – Whitten LP – Hayes, French
The Gremlin bats stayed hot in this game pounding out 15 hits and 10 runs. Bryan Abrey lead the attack with 3 hits and HR. Matty Roy and Nick Mullins also had 3 hits each. Sean Whitten allowed 2 runs in the first inning of his Gremlin debut but settled in and didn’t allow a run the rest of the way.
Game # 4 – Pool Play
NY Gremlins 8 Pennsylvania Power 1
WP – Cleary, Whitten LP- Potolicchio
The Gremlins used the long ball pounding out 6 HR’s to account for all their runs. Todd Schultz went 3-3 with 2 HR’s, Nick Mullins also went 3-3 with a HR, Tyson Byrne, Matty Roy & Bryan Abrey also added a HR each. Sean Cleary & Sean Whitten combined for the win & 13K’s
Game # 5 – Semi Final
NY Gremlins 5 Jarvis Twins 4
WP – Kirkpatrick, Cleary LP- French, Farion
This back and forth contest saw the Gremlins come away with the walk off win in the bottom of the 7th. Bryan Abrey continued his hot hitting with 2 hits and another HR. Ben Wideman hit a game tying HR in the bottom of the 7th. Travis Wilson and Tyson Byrne had 2 hits each with Wilson driving in the winning run. Kirkpatrick went the first 6 innings and Cleary pitched the 7th to combine for the win.
Game # 6 – Final
NY Gremlins 3 Hill United 1
WP – Cleary, Kirkpatrick LP- Folkard
The Gremlins finished their undefeated weekend with a 3-1 win over Hill United in the Championship game. Ben Wideman drove in the first run of the game with a 2 out single in the bottom of the 2nd. After Hill tied the game in the top of the 3rd on a solo HR by Brad Ezekiel, Gremlin Blair Ezekiel struck the deciding blow with a 2 run HR. Andrew Kirkpatrick threw 4 scoreless innings in relief of starter Sean Cleary.
Overall the team played well in all facets hitting .368 lead by Tyson Byrne .476, Bryan Abrey .471, Nick Mullins .467 & Wayne Laulu ..400. The defense only made 3 errors on the weekend. The pitching staff had a 2.37 ERA and was lead by Andrew Kirkpatrick with 17 innings and a 1.58 ERA.
The Gremlins will be back in action at the Boys of Summer July 12-14
