U21 Men’s International Softball Championship
Day 4 Results

(Saskatoon, SK) The U21 Men’s International Softball Championship wrapped up its preliminary round schedule on Friday in Saskatoon, SK, with the playoff picture now set for Saturday.
 
New Brunswick 6 vs. Manitoba 3
 
Manitoba took a 3-0 lead after three innings of play, but New Brunswick came back with a run in the fourth and five in the fifth to earn the victory. Team Manitoba opened the scoring with a three-run homerun by Tyler Woodhouse in the bottom of the third, but New Brunswick got one of those runs back on an RBI double by John Cortes in the top of the fourth inning. The following inning, Brett Young tied the game with a two-out, two-run triple and scored on a single by Braden Scott to give New Brunswick the lead. Team NB would go on to add two more runs on wild pitches to take the 6-3 lead, and Manitoba was unable to get anything going in the last three innings. Scott earned the win in the pitcher’s circle, allowing three runs on five hits with 10 strikeouts.
 
New Zealand 7 vs. Alberta 5
 
ISA New Zealand put up seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and held on for the 7-5 win against Alberta. Taylor Schubada led the game off with a homerun for Alberta, but New Zealand wasted no time getting things going offensively as their leadoff batter triple and quickly scored on a single by Bradley Bennett. NZ added another run on an error and loaded the bases, scoring a run on a walk and another on a single before Tao Tauranga cleared the bases with a double. Alberta chipped away at the lead with a run in the fourth and three in the fifth on a three-run homerun by Ambrose Firkus, but was not able to get any closer.
 
British Columbia 6 vs. Quebec 1
 
Team BC built up a 5-0 lead and pitcher Brandon Peck limited Quebec to only two hits and registered 11 strikeouts to earn the complete game win. Brady Quaite opened the scoring with a leadoff homerun in the top of the third for BC, while Brad Robinson added a three-run shot in the fourth and Kelby Wittich had an RBI single to give them a 5-0 lead through four innings of play. Quebec was able to score a run on an RBI ground out by Francois-Charles Rene in the bottom of the sixth, but BC got that run back on a leadoff homerun by Josh Anderson to begin the top of the seventh.
 
Ontario 7 vs. New Brunswick 0
 
Team Ontario kept their preliminary round record perfect as George Armstrong fired a five inning one-hitter to defeat New Brunswick. Ontario got on the board with an RBI single by Ty Sebastian in the top of the first, and added two more in the second. Travis Jones hit an RBI single in the third, and Ontario tacked on three more runs in the fifth highlighted by an RBI double by Dallas Slack. Devon McKenzie registered New Brunswick’s hit by leading off the bottom of the fifth with a single.
 
Newfoundland and Labrador 13 vs. Northwest Territories 3
 
Newfoundland and Labrador put up eight runs in the bottom of the first and added five more in the third to defeat the Northwest Territories in five innings. In the bottom of the first inning, Daniel Dalton hit a pair of run-scoring doubles, Eddie Hefferan connected with a two-run double, and Johnny Doyle and Troy Leonard each added RBI singles, with two more runs scoring on RBI ground outs. In the third, Hefferan hit an RBI triple and scored on a single by Colin Walsh, who went on to score on a triple by Jeremy O’Rielly. Mark Power later smashed a two-run homerun to put NL up 13-0. Team NWT got on the board in the top of the fifth as John White hit an RBI single and Jordan Smith followed with a two-run single, but that was as close as they would get.
 
New Zealand 10 vs. Nova Scotia 9
 
In a wild game, New Zealand took an early 5-0 lead but needed four runs in the bottom of the seventh to edge Nova Scotia. Taylor Hick blasted a three-run homerun and New Zealand added two more runs on errors to take a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. However, Nova Scotia came back to tie the game with five runs of their own in the top of the fourth on a two-run single by Alex Anthony and a few New Zealand errors. NZ re-took the lead on an RBI double by Josh Gettins in the bottom of the inning, but Alex Anthony blasted a three-run homerun in the top of the fifth to give Nova Scotia an 8-6 lead. Nova Scotia added an insurance run on an RBI single by Cole Baker in the top of the seventh, but New Zealand came roaring back with a two-run double by Curtis Huata, an RBI single by Bradley Bennett to tie the game, and a game-winning single by Gettins for the walk off win.
 
Saskatchewan 3 vs. Argentina 2
 
In a battle for first place in the Saskatoon Inn Hotel (Black) division, pitchers Huemul Mata Carabajal from Argentina and Aidan Patrick from Saskatchewan battled it out until Patrick scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh. Argentina got on the scoreboard first as Gonzalo Masmu led off the game on a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a triple by Teo Magliavacca. Saskatchewan would respond by taking the lead with two runs scored on an error in the bottom of the third, but Argentina would go on to tie the game on an RBI single by Masmu in the top of the fifth. Saskatchewan loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh, with Patrick scoring the winning run on a wild pitch. Patrick allowed two runs on four hits with nine strikeouts, while Mata Carabajal gave up three runs – one earned – on five hits with 10 strikeouts.
