Clearwater Bomber group former to preserve team's history

August 1, 2013

Clearwater, FL

An event planned to honor Clearwater’s most famous sports team is slated for Monday, August 12, 2013.  The Clearwater Bombers, 10-time national men’s fast pitch softball champions, will be discussed and remembered from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Pete & Shorty’s Tavern, 2820 Gulf to Bay Blvd.  The public is invited.

A recently-formed group, Clearwater Bombers’ World Class Fast Pitch Legacy Committee, is sponsoring the Bomber Blast event. The group is made up of former players and fans.

The social gathering at Pete & Shorty’s  is to acquaint the public with the new organization and its plans. The committee is working with the Clearwater Historical Society and hopes to produce a film, establish a museum, and sponsor other projects.

The Bombers were active from 1940-2000, and the team piled up some amazing records. The Bombers won 10 national titles and finished second eight other times. They won over 4,000 games, placed 24 members in the National Softball Hall of Fame, and appeared in 45 national tournaments. All of these were more than any other team. The team traveled throughout the United States and Canada, and also visited Cuba and Puerto Rico. They brought teams from dozens of other cities to Clearwater for games and helped bring the men’s national tournament to Clearwater 10 times from 1955-1997. The club also helped bring the women’s national to town twice. An-over 45 team, made up of former players, hosted and won its tournament in 1996.

Food and drinks will be “on your own” at the gathering. For more information, contact Jack Gibson at (727) 799-1524, Gary Kane at (813) 855-5420 or Jim Videtich at (727) 442-6981.
