(Sherbrooke, QC) The fourth day of competition at the Canada Summer Games concluded on Tuesday with the top four teams earning playoff berths in the medal round. Manitoba was the only unbeaten team remaining after Day 3, and after improving their record to 7-0, they lost their first game of the tournament to Quebec to create a three-way tie at the top of the standings.
 
Saskatchewan 14 vs. Prince Edward Island 5
 
In a game that was postponed on Sunday in the top of the sixth leading 8-5, Saskatchewan scored two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh to complete a 14-5 win over Prince Edward Island. Prince Edward Island built a 5-1 lead after two innings of play, but Saskatchewan scored two runs in each of the third and fourth innings to tie the game before scoring nine in the last two innings. Keeley Van Blaricom (Southey, SK) pitched five and a third scoreless innings of relief, striking out seven batters and allowing four hits. At the plate, Morgan Garman (Saskatoon, SK), Cassidy Ball (Saskatoon, SK) and Van Blaricom all contributed two hits, while Ashlyn Johnsen (Saskatoon, SK) hit a two-run double in the fourth inning for Saskatchewan. Jenna MacLellan had a double and two singles to pace PEI, with Katelyn Keoughan and Laura Bradley each chipping in with two hits.
 
Nova Scotia 2 vs. New Brunswick 1
 
In a very tight ball game between too evenly matched teams, pitchers Samantha DeBortoli (Saint John, NB) and Andrea Williams (Park Falls, NS) battled it out in the pitcher’s circle to force the first extra-inning game of the tournament. Nova Scotia opened the scoring on a solo homerun by Taylor Macleod Canning (Stellarton, NS) in the top of the second, and New Brunswick went on to tie the game on an RBI groundout to force extra innings. Nova Scotia pushed a run across in the top of the eighth on an RBI ground out, and New Brunswick was unable to score in the bottom of the inning. DeBortoli allowed two runs on only two hits with 12 strikeouts in the loss, while Williams was also very effective in allowing only one unearned run on three hits with seven strikeouts.
 
Manitoba 7 vs. Alberta 5
 
Manitoba remained unbeaten by jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first and responded each team Alberta scored to come out on top with the win. Courtney Kwasnitza (Stonewall, MB) had a triple, a double and two runs scored for Manitoba, while Jade Anderson (Winnipeg, MB) had a triple, a single and also scored twice. Katie Hlushak (Airdrie, AB) hit a two-run triple in the top of the fourth and scored twice for Alberta.
 
Ontario 15 vs. Prince Edward Island 0
 
Ontario scored 10 runs in the bottom of the third to defeat Prince Edward Island 15-0 in three innings on the run rule. Lauren McLaughlin (Oakville, ON) fired the three-inning no-hitter, striking out one batter, while Logan White (Brantford, ON) had three hits and drove in three runs at the top of the lineup and Miranda Castiglione (Brampton, ON) delivered a double, two singles and two runs batted in. Ontario pounded out 14 hits, with Janet Leung (Mississauga, ON), Lindsay Hayward (Ancaster, ON) and Shelby Heyd (Innisfil, ON) all adding two.
 
Saskatchewan 12 vs. Newfoundland & Labrador 4
 
Newfoundland and Labrador matched every run Saskatchewan put up in the first seven innings with the score deadlocked at 4-4 before Saskatchewan exploded for eight runs in the top of the eighth for the extra inning win. Both teams scored single runs in each of the fourth and sixth innings before Saskatchewan took a 4-2 lead in the top of the seventh, but Newfoundland fought back to tie the game and push it to an extra inning. Kristen Cruickshank (Regina, SK) had two hits and three runs batted in for Saskatchewan including the game-winning hit in the top of the eighth. Alex Baylak (Regina, SK), Carmen Hughes (Regina, SK), Ashlyn Johnsen and Lorissa Thompson (Regina, SK) all contributed two hits for Saskatchewan, while Newfoundland managed three hits by Janie O’Leary (Hollyrood, NL), Callie Langmead (Flatrock, NL) and Jillian Mason (Conception Harbour, NL).
 
British Columbia 16 vs. New Brunswick 1
 
British Columbia scored 16 runs on 17 hits to defeat New Brunswick in four innings. Olivia Hornstein (Surrey, BC) led the way offensively with a double, three singles and two runs batted in, while Chelsea Jenner (Abbotsford, BC) added a double, two singles and also drove in two runs and Cassandra Dypchey (South Surrey, BC) had two hits and three RBI’s. Stephani Ellis (Vancouver, BC), Emma Entzminger (Victoria, BC) and Courtney Bridge (Thompson, MB) all had two hits and two RBI’s. Shelby Justason (Quispamsis, NB) drove in New Brunswick’s run with a single in the bottom of the fourth.
 
Quebec 1 vs. Manitoba 0
 
In a battle between two teams at the top of the standings, Quebec gave Manitoba its first loss of the tournament as Caroline Champoux (Terrebonne, QC) outpitched Brooke Seneshen (Winnipeg, MB) in a fantastic pitching duel. Champoux limited Manitoba to four hits and struck out 11 in the seven inning shutout, while Seneshen allowed a run while scattering seven hits and striking out two. Champoux also helped her own cause at the plate, driving in the only run of the game with a double in the top of the second inning. Champoux and Rochelle Flanagan (Beaconsfield, QC) each had two hits for Quebec, while Courtney Kwasnitza had a double for Manitoba.
 
Nova Scotia 3 vs. Prince Edward Island 0
 
Nova Scotia notched their second win of the day as Andrea Williams limited Prince Edward Island to four hits and struck out seven in seven innings for the complete game shutout. Taylor MacLeod Canning had a double, two singles and drove in two runs to lead Nova Scotia to victory, with Allison Shunamon (Mount Uniacke, NS) adding a double and a single. Laura Bradley had two of PEI’s four hits.
 
Saskatchewan 4 vs. Alberta 0
 
Keeley Van Blaricom fired a three-hitter and struck out seven in a complete game shutout win over Alberta. Saskatchewan scored single runs in each of the first, second, fourth and seventh innings, led by Kenzie Friesen’s (Saskatoon, SK) two hits. Alex Baylak, Cassidy Ball, Kelsey Teneycke (Watrous, SK) and Kristen Herman (Saskatoon, SK) each drove in a run. Casey-May Huff (Calgary, AB) notched a double for Alberta.
 
Ontario 7 vs. British Columbia 5
 
In another fantastic matchup on Day 4, Ontario held a 3-1 lead after one inning before British Columbia scored four in the second to take a 5-3 lead, but Ontario tied the game with two runs in the third and scored two more in the fourth for the 7-5 win. Shannon Davidson (Whitby, ON) led Ontario offensively with a three-run homerun and drove in a run on a groundout, while Miranda Castiglione was two-for-two with a run batted in and a run scored. Courtney Bridge hit a two run triple and scored on an error and Cassandra Dypchey also added an RBI triple for BC. Olivia Hornstein also contributed an RBI double in the loss.
 
Quebec 15 vs. Newfoundland & Labrador 0
 
In the final game of the day, Quebec scored 15 runs on 20 hits to defeat Newfoundland and Labrador 15-0 in five innings. Karelle Cote (Vaudreuil-Dorion, QC) fired a no-hitter and struck out nine in the win. Samantha Kwok (Ile-Bizard, QC) hit three doubles and a single and scored three runs, while Christina Latreille (Coteau-du-Lac, QC) had two doubles and a single and three runs batted in. Corinne Brookhuis (East York, ON) had two hits and also drove in three with Maude Sigouin (Laval, QC) contributing a triple, two singles and two RBI’s.
 
After four days of competition, the playoff round has taken shape as Manitoba (7-1), Quebec (7-1), Ontario (7-1) and British Columbia (6-2) have secured the four playoff spots in the medal round. However, the six remaining games on Wednesday will determine final pacing for playoff matchups, with a key game between Quebec (7-1) and British Columbia (6-2) at 8:00pm EDT. All six games on Wednesday will be played at Bureau Park.
