Canada Summer Games – Softball Medal Round Results
 (Sherbrooke, QC) After finishing fourth in the preliminary round with tight losses to Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba, British Columbia fought all the way back to defeat those three very same teams in the playoff round to win their third consecutive Gold medal at the Canada Summer Games. The final day of competition saw a lengthy rain delay that forced the cancellation of the consolation final between Saskatchewan and New Brunswick, and suspended play in the sixth inning of the Bronze medal game between British Columbia and Quebec. The grounds crew from both Desranleau and Bureau Park did a fantastic job of making the field playable again, earning a loud applause from the many fans who stuck around to see the conclusion of the event.  Bronze Medal Game: British Columbia 2 vs. Quebec 1  In the Bronze medal game, Quebec opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning when Brigitte Aizprua (Montreal, QC) hit a one-out single, was sacrificed to second and scored on a single by Corinne Brookhuis (East York, ON) to give Quebec a 1-0 lead. British Columbia responded by loading the bases in the top of the fourth, but Quebec pitcher Caroline Champoux (Terrebonne, QC) got a big strikeout to end the inning. Both teams got leadoff singles in the fifth inning, but were not able to push either runner in to score. In the top of the sixth, Chelsea Jenner (Abbotsford, BC) led off with a single, was sacrificed to second and later scored on a single by Jaycee Affeldt (Maple Ridge, BC) that was bobbled in centerfield. Courtney Bridge (Thompson, MB) then doubled to score the runner from second and give Team BC the 2-1 lead before the rain started to fall and the umpires called the teams to their dugouts. Play resumed after a nearly two hour rain delay, with BC holding on for the 2-1 win to advance to the Gold medal game.  Jaycee Affeldt got the win in the pitcher’s circle for BC, allowing one run on six hits with five strikeouts in seven innings pitched. Caroline Champoux took the loss, yielding two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts. BC got hits from seven different players, while Champoux went two-for-two for Quebec in the loss. With the loss, Quebec earned its second consecutive Bronze medal at the Canada Summer Games.  Gold Medal Game: British Columbia 9 vs. Manitoba 1  British Columbia carried their momentum from big wins over Ontario on Thursday and Quebec earlier in the day and broke the game open with five runs in the top of the fourth to defeat Manitoba 9-1 in five innings to win the Gold medal. BC did not waste any time by opening the scoring on a wild pitch in the top of the first. The following inning, Hilary Strelau (Richmond, BC) smacked a two-run double to give BC an early 3-0 lead. Manitoba was looking to respond in the bottom of the inning with a pair of singles to lead off the inning, but after the runners were sacrificed to second and third, the next batter hit a line drive to shortstop and the runner on second was retired on the double play. Manitoba continued to pressure and was able to score a run on a single by Makensy Payne (Winnipeg, MB) in the bottom of the third, but BC came right back and scored five runs to take control of the game, highlighted by a two-run triple by Cassandra Dypchey (South Surrey, BC), an RBI single by Kaitlyn Cameron (Langley, BC) and a bases-loaded walk. BC went on to add a run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth, and Manitoba could not get anything going in the bottom of the inning to end the game on the run rule.  Tori Belton (Langley, BC) earned the win in the pitcher’s circle, allowing one run on seven hits and one strikeout, while Dypchey and Strelau each drove in two runs. British Columbia earned their third consecutive Gold medal, while Manitoba earned their highest finish ever at the Canada Summer Games with a Silver medal.  Final Standings Gold British Columbia Silver Manitoba Bronze Quebec 4 Ontario 5 Saskatchewan 6 New Brunswick 7 Alberta 8 Nova Scotia 9 Prince Edward Island 10 Newfoundland & Labrador
