2013 Durk Sherman Classic Results
Elkland, PA – Safari Nordic finished the 2013 61st Annual Elkland Labor Day Tournament, also known as the Durk Sherman Classic, with an impressive 5-0 record, backed the pitching of MVP (Pitcher) Josh Johnson, and the hitting of MVP (Player) Jerlin Rutt.
Safari outscored opponents 29-10 in their 5 games of play at the tournament. Safari would play Shaggy Dog in the championship game securing the tournament title with 6-2 win over Shaggy (4-2). Blue Lake Power (4-2) finished in third place, with the tournament host team ESA Bellys (3-2) finishing in fourth place.
31 games were played at the tournament which had 1 team fold prior to the beginning of play. 14 of the 31 games were decided by 3 runs or less in the tournament (45.2% of games). Homeruns were down this season for the tournament, with just 39 total for the tournament (1.25 homeruns per game), down from the 77 total homeruns hit last labor day weekend (1.97 homeruns per game).
The tournament survived heavy rains on Saturday night, with the ESA crew staying until the late hours or Saturday night/Sunday morning, using heavy equipment to put in all new infields for Field 1 so games could continue at 9 AM on Sunday.
