ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Durham College women’s fastball team opened up their 2013 season with a little bit of everything this weekend on their annual road trip to Monroe Community College in Rochester, N.Y.

The exhibition series opened up with two ties on Saturday, as the games were limited to seven innings because of the inclement weather. The Lords also had the chance to play Mansfield University for the first time, which is an NCAA Division II school. On Sunday, the Lords pitchers struggled to keep Monroe off the board as they fell behind early and were unable to get back into each game.

“Overall, it was a good weekend and learning experience for our team,” said head coach Jim Nemish. “With nine freshmen in the line-up, everyone got a chance to play a lot and get their first taste of college ball. Moving forward, the players know the areas that need work and will continue to improve. The coaching staff was very pleased with everyone’s performance and it was a good test to the start of the season.”

GAME ONE – Durham tied Monroe 4-4

After scoring a run of their own in the first inning, the Lords showed their inexperience in the second after committing several costly errors which resulted in four runs for Monroe.

Despite falling behind, the Lords did not lose their composure as they clawed back into the game scoring two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh, resulting in a 4-4 draw.

Lydia Kalbfleisch started the game and gave up four runs on four hits while striking out three Monroe batters. Freshman Danielle Crosby came into the game in relief in the 5th inning and shut down Monroe, facing seven batters and striking out three.

Top hitters for Durham included Kayla Gammie who went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Laura Arbour who was 2-for-3.

GAME TWO – Durham tied Mansfield 3-3

Game two came against Mansfield University from Pennsylvania, who is an NCAA Division II team with a record of 48-3 this past spring.

Not intimidated by their opponent, the Lords got off to a great start and held a 3-1 lead into the fifth inning. However, Mansfield proved why they posted such an impressive record in the spring as they fought back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at three runs apiece.

Freshman Ashley Black started the game and gave up three runs while striking out seven batters. Danielle Crosby once again came into the game in relief and shut the door with one out in the inning, and Mansfield threatening with runners on first and second.

GAME THREE – Monroe defeated Durham 10-2

Monroe was able to take control of Sunday’s opening game early on as they scored nine runs in the first two innings, which included a grand slam.

After falling behind 10-0, Durham was able to score only two runs and were never able to get back into the game.

A bright spot for Durham was the debut of pitcher Jolene Bull, who came into the game in the third inning and did not allow a Monroe run.

GAME FOUR – Monroe defeated Durham 5-0

The Lords bats were cold once again as Monroe earned a 5-0 shutout to close out the exhibition series.

Durham could only put together three hits in the game which were all singles. Once again, errors and lack of timely hitting in this game was Durham’s Achilles heel.
