Durham bats come alive in Hamilton

OCAA Women’s Fastball: Durham defeated Mohawk 23-2

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Durham College women’s fastball team has broken a season opening hitting cold spell in a big way as they put 23 runs on the board on Friday night against the Mohawk Mountaineers.

After scoring seven runs in their first four games, Durham has gone on to score 38 runs in their past two victories.

After going up on Mohawk 11-2 over the first three innings in Friday’s game, Durham was able to put up 11 more in the fourth inning to take a commanding 22-2 lead. The Lords would go on and add one more run for good measure in the top of the fifth inning.

The Lords hit and run total was matching against Mohawk as they registered 23 hits on the night. Six players in the Lords line-up had three hits apiece.

Stephanie McLachlin (Corunna, Ont.) had a break out game going 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs. Jessica Pike (Whitby, Ont.) and Danielle Crosby (Whitby, Ont.) combined for six singles while Pike knocked in five RBIs. Ashley Black (Waterloo, Ont.), Laura Arbour (Whitby, Ont.) and Kayla Gammie (Guelph, Ont.) were also able to put up three hits in the win.

Although the bats were in the spotlight, Crosby had a great game on the mound as she allowed one earned run on five hits while striking out three batters to earn her first OCAA victory. Gammie called a great game behind the plate as she is starting to show great poise in her handing of the pitching staff.

Durham’s defence is also starting to click for coach Nemish. McLachlin threw out a runner at first from right field and Hope Eagleson (Plattsville, Ont.) was strong all night in left.

The Lords will now head to Buffalo, NY for a weekend tournament. Durham will take on Mercyhurst, Monroe and Erie on Saturday in round robin action.
