Durham loss sets up a showdown at Seneca

OCAA Women’s Fastball: Seneca defeated Durham 5-3

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College women’s fastball team is in unfamiliar territory this season as they will be fighting for their playoff lives in the closing games of the regular season after suffering a 5-3 loss to Seneca.

With a doubleheader against the Sting slated for next Tuesday night in North York, the Lords are 5-7 and sit one game ahead of Seneca (4-8) for the final postseason position in the OCAA.

Friday’s game was evenly matched with the teams trading a pair of runs in the opening inning. After their rough start, starting pitchers Lydia Kalbfleisch (Durham) and Krista Owczar (Seneca) would settle down and pitch three consecutive scoreless innings.

In the fifth inning, Seneca would manage to strike again, this time putting three runs on the board to take a 5-2 lead. Over the next three innings, Durham would only manage to score one more run as they dropped their fourth straight decision.

Kalbfleisch was credited with the loss as she pitched five innings, allowing five runs (three earned), four hits and two walks. Danielle Crosby allowed one hit over two innings of work in relief.

Lauren McLaughlin entered the game in the fourth inning for Seneca and earned the win after allowing only one run and two hits over three innings.

Kelsey Gallant was the only Lord to have a multi-hit night as she went 2-for-4 at the plate, with two runs and an RBI which included an inside the park home run.

The top hitters for Seneca were Owczar and Lindsay Balance who had two hits apiece.
