Elite men of softball are coming to Canberra

22 November 2013

Australia’s elite men of fast pitch softball will be in action at the Hawker International Softball Centre later this month as they compete for a total prize pool of $20,000 in the 2013 ACTEW Water Canberra Skins Tournament.

President of the Fast Pitch Softball League, Bob Harrow, said the tournament, which has been in operation for over 25 consecutive years, is the longest running men’s softball tournament in Australia.

“The Skins tournament provides an opportunity for the people of Canberra to come and watch men’s fast pitch softball at its most exciting and competitive level.”

“This year we have teams coming from New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia, which means that most of the current Aussie Steelers players will be in action at some time during this event,” Bob said.

The A grade competition will see 8 teams do battle in a bash for cash, while 9 B grade teams will not only be competing for cash prizes, but also to prove that they can mix it with the big boys.

“The B grade competition often provides some real entertaining softball as it is a chance for many of our future young softballer’s to prove that they are ready to move to the next level and take a step toward representing Australia,” Bob said.

The 2013 tournament will also see Raffles School of Singapore back to compete in the Under 15 division of the Aussies Got Talent tournament, which has grown to see 7 teams taking the diamond in this year’s tournament.

“Most of the ACT 89ers will take to the diamond in this event including Michael Tanner, Andrew Kirkpatrick, Nick Norton and Adam Folkard, to mention but a few.”

“And with the top pitchers in this competition launching the ball at speeds close to 140km/h, this is a spectator sport that has to be seen to be believed.”

ABOUT FASTPITCH SOFTBALL AND SKINS TOURNAMENTS

Fast pitch softball is a game of strategy with the ball pitched at maximum speed with little or no visible arc.  The way the ball is released by the pitcher causes a spin motion on the ball, which contributes to a significant part of the speed and curvature.  The ball can be pitched at speeds in excess of 130 kilometres per hour by world class pitchers!

A Skins tournament refers to a competition where the aim is not so much to win each game, rather to earn the most money per game.  Different achievements attract different prize money, for example, hitting a ball that allows a player to make a home run might be worth $200.  The two teams with the greatest earnings at the end of competition play in the final.  The winner of the final earns even more money.
