NY Swashbucklers at AAU

The NY Swashbucklers captured 3rd place over the weekend in the AAU International Men's Fastpitch Championship, finishing with a 6-1 record. Swash finished the round robin portion of play with a 3-0 record, earning the # 4 overall seed heading into single elimination. In the round of 32, Swash defeated the # 29 seed Combatientes 15-0, backed by the 2 hit 11k performance of Jerlin Rutt, homeruns by Derrick Kennedy, Pat Sagdal and Kris Bogach, and 2 hits and 2 rbi's apiece from Josh Horton and Mike Hoadley. The round of 16 saw a hard-fought 1-0 win over the # 13 Bar NAFA Selects, riding the right arm of Rich Haldane and a 1st inning rbi double from Hoadley. In the quarter-final matchup with # 5 Los Socios, Swash turned a 1-0 5th inning deficit into a 2-1 lead behind a leadoff single by Justin Zimmerman and back to back doubles by Rich Haldane and Pat Sagdal. A long Mike Hoadley HR in the 6th added an insurance run and Rob Schweyer made it stand up with a dominating 2 hit 14 k performance. The Swash ran out of steam in the semi-finals though, running into the top seeded NY Gremlins team fresh off a 5-2 win over Hill United. Down 2-0 after the top half of the 1st, Swash cut the lead in half with a leadoff triple by Pat Sagdal and RBI groundout from Kris Bogach. The Gremlins extended the lead to 5-1 with Swash leaving 4 runners on over the next 3 innings before a solo shot from Derrick Kennedy cut the lead to 5-2. The game was finally broken open in the top of the 7th with the Gremlins adding 4 insurance runs for the 9-2 final, eliminating Swash in 3rd place.
