WOODLAWN SPRINGBOARD

On Saturday April 26, the Ontario Amateur Softball Association brought its Springboard Program to Stonecrest Elementary School in the hamlet of Woodlawn in West Carleton, west of Ottawa. This was the second consecutive year for the Springboard in West Carleton and once again it drew a large group of athletes and ran successfully.

In the morning session there were 55 players registered for the U12 skills clinic. The afternoon had smaller numbers, but the 15 attendees that did attend the U16 component of the event were very keen.

The skills clinic was comprised of a high tempo warm-up, and various stations for hitting, fielding, throwing, pitching and base-running. The lead instructor was Shawn Trudeau, who did an excellent job of interacting with the athletes, keeping things fast-paced and interesting. Working the various stations were instructors Al Read, Cory Morrison, Dave Bahm, Kevin McGuire, Jeff Cavanagh, Erin Mulivhill, Grace Lonergan and Jean Cardona. The pitching session was instructed by CANpitch’s Jamey Mick and former Olympian Robin Mackin, with assistance from Andy Barber and Brad Porter. Garry Waugh coordinated the overall organization and registration, and was assisted by Adam Brown.

There was also a "Learn to Coach" session onsite, with 16 coaches in attendance lead by Ken Naylor.

Each player received a training softball and information booklet as they were leaving the event. The players in attendance were excited and enjoyed themselves. There was positive feedback from players and parents - a few asked "when is the next one of these!"

Regards,

Adam Brown

PORT HOPE SPRINGBOARD

Our second Springboard of the 2014 season, held at Port Hope High School on Saturday, April 12, was very successful. We did not have a large number of participants, but those who attended received lots of individual work on their softball skills. Topnotch, and enthusiastic instruction was provided by Scott Tuttle, Scott Searle and Shawn Trudeau, assisted by Taylor Brown, Haaken Zatterberg ,  John Klein, Jordon Ellis and Brandon Landry. Participants had fun polishing their hitting, throwing, fielding and baserunning skills. CANpitch Instructor Erin Mills worked with beginner and experienced pitchers to perfect their pitching technique. An added feature at this Springboard was the use of the Dartfish video software program to analyze and provide instant visual feedback to players.
Ten coaches attended the four-hour Drills, Drills, Drills for Coaches session which provided them with helpful tips on creating and implementing drills for their athletes. The feedback from this workshop was that excellent instruction and very useful practice drills were provided by Manny Amaro, Softball Ontario Coach Facilitator.
Many thanks to Brenda Whitehead of Cobourg Legion Minor Softball Organization for volunteering to host and to help organize the event. Thanks also to OASA members Adam Danford and Steven Davis for giving us a hand.

PALMERSTON SPRINGBOARD

On Saturday April 5th, the Ontario Amateur Softball Association brought its Springboard Program to Palmerston, Ontario.  Always a backbone of Softball history and development, the host committee of Ron Gilbert and Kelly Culp were welcoming to all players, coaches, volunteers, and parents at Norwell District High School.

In the morning session there were forty-six players registered for the U12 skills clinic.  The afternoon brought thirty-three eager U16 players with a willingness to learn.  The skills clinic which included an exciting warm-up, hitting, fielding, throwing, and base-running was instructed by George Ryder, Brad Thomson, Nic Moore, Tessa Culp, Mark Matheson, Gilles Butcher, Scott Walls, and Ty Sebastian.  The pitching session was instructed by CANpitch’s Ty Sebastian.   The players’ willingness to learn, accept feedback, and overall approach made it a rewarding day for all those involved.

Thank you, to Dennis Dosman and Gilles Butcher for registering the participants and helping to keep the program running smoothly.  It is important to note that without our hosts and their leadership, these days can not take place. It is great to see all of these people giving back to the sport that they loved to play.  A special thank you goes out to Ron Gilbert for his on-going planning and perseverance.  Travelling through a snow storm, white-outs and avoiding closed roads did not stop all the participants, coaches, and volunteers in taking part in a fantastic day!  The OASA looks forward to coming back to Palmerston in the near future!

CAYUGA SPRINGBOARD

On  May 3, the fourth and final Springboard of the year was held at the Cayuga Secondary School.   This clinic was hosted by the Fisherville minor ball headed by Renee' Anthony.
There were 28 participants in the morning session and 21 in the afternoon session.
Each registrant received a tee shirt.
The morning session started with a dynamic warm up led by George Ryder and Greg Cournyea.
Brad Thomson instructed the hitting session.  The players were divided into four groups and set up at instant screens for batting off tees and soft toss hitting, working on the tips that Brad had provided. Allan Phibbs, Andrew Phibbs, Greg Cournyea, Jamie Simpson, George Ryder, Dan Fulsom, Adam Smith and Brad Thomson provided excellent instruction.
Adam Smith provided instruction on fielding techniques and throwing.
The pitchers were instructed by Maria Greco.  The pitchers then were doing the fundamentals that Maria had given them and were closely monitored by George Ryder, Jamie Simpson and Andrew Phibbs.  The catchers were being instructed by Allan Phibbs, Greg Cornyea, and Stephen Greco.
Adam Smith and the other instructors provided instruction on baserunning as well as catching of flyballs followed by a competition on catching fly balls to end the session.

The afternoon session followed the same routine as the morning session.
At the end of each session the participants were presented with a ball and a handbook.

OASA Minor Committee Update

With the 2014 season fast approaching the Minor Committee has started to put the wheels in motion to make this another successful season for all of our minor teams.

Once again this year the OASA will be involved in Springboard events across the province in April and early May to help reach out to local associations by providing one day clinics that cover the basics of hitting, fielding and pitching from some of the best coaches and players across the province.
Hosts have been lined up for almost all of our Qualifiers, Eliminations and Provincial tournaments and we thank all of those who have stepped forward.  We look forward to good competitions at all of these events.
Once again teams in Peewee, Bantam and Midget will have the opportunity to represent us at Canadians, Eastern or Western championships across the country, based on how they place in the Eliminations.  Each division convenor will be able to provide more details to their teams.
There are no changes to the rules for 2014 after several new changes were implemented in 2013 in a move to adopt several Long Term Player Development principles.
In the November 2013 to February 2014 time frame Softball Performance Centres were held over 4 weekends offering expert instruction to U14 and U16 male and female players.  There were 3 regional centres across the province in London / Ingersoll, Vaughan and Napanee that were used.  Plans are underway to offer a similar program for U14, U16 and U18 players in the November 2014 to February 2015 timeframe.  These centres offer an exceptional opportunity for athletes to receive focused all around training and instruction in all aspects of the game in strength and conditioning, nutrition, sports psychology, batting, fielding, pitching and catching from experts in each area.  Stay tuned for more information on these centres over the coming months and we encourage players looking to take their game to the next level to take advantage of this opportunity.
Good luck to all teams and have a great season.  We'll see you at the ball park!
