The Black Sox softball team have scored two wins from two games in their latest contests on their Canadian tour.

Once again having to battle heavy rain, the team scored a 10-0 win over the Mississauga Arrows in Ontario in a six innings game with some big hitting from Jereme Raemaki leading the way in the first innings with a line drive over left field. Josh Thomson and Thomas Enkoa also hit home runs assuring the team of scoring throughout the game.

The second game was a four innings contest against the Toronto Gators with the Black Sox winning 4-2. Bayley Hoani produced a solid pitching performance on the mound and was ably supported by Campbell Gibson on debut who struck out seven of the 11 hitters he faced.

There was an impressive start by lead-off hitter, Ben Enoka who sent the ball out of the park at the top of the first inning against the powerful Gators. However Campbell Makea was the pick of the Black Sox hitters with a triple in the second innings and a single in the fourth inning which scored captain, Nathan Nukunuku.

In the fifth innings Thomson hit a massive home run into the trees well beyond the outfield fence which put the result beyond doubt.

The next game for the Black Sox is on Saturday in Ontario.

The tour is part of an extended build up for the team for the 2015 world championships to be held in Canada.

MISSISSAUGA NEWS ARTICLE

Mississauga News  with some great pictures

MISSISSAUGA — The Mississauga Arrows enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime experience last night  when they played host to the six-time world men's fastpitch champion New Zealand Black Sox at Meadowvale North Sports Park.

And it's a good thing they got the experience out of the way, because they'd only want to get beaten as badly as they were once in a lifetime.

Despite being crushed 10-0 by the visitors, Blair Setford was happy to welcome the six-time world champion Black Sox in an exhibition double-header with the Toronto Gators playing New Zealand in game two.

"This is a great experience for a lot of guys here who will play good ball locally, but otherwise wouldn't normally get the chance to play against an international team of that calibre," said Setford, who plays for the Arrows and manages the Gators.

"My intent on bringing them here to play a league team as opposed to an all-star team was to give them that opportunity and I'm thrilled that they got it."

The double header was hosted by the Mississauga North Baseball Association.

The Black Sox flew in to Toronto Sunday and began their summer tour through Canada Tuesday in Stouffville.

New Zealand is visiting Canada in preparation for next year's world championships in New Zealand.

Before each game in last night's double header, the Black Sox performed the haka, a native war dance performed by all New Zealand sports teams that involves loud chanting, aggressive body movements and fierce facial expressions.

"It's closely linked to the heritage of our players and something they're rightfully proud of," said Black Sox manager Mark Sorenson. "It's very important to them and they practice it as much as they practice softball. It links New Zealand to the world I suppose."

New Zealand's Josh Thomson, Jerome Raemaki and Thomas Enoka led the Black Sox with home runs while pitchers Bayley Hoani and Campbell Gibson combined to shut out the Arrows, who have won two of the last three Golden Horseshoe Fastball League champions.

Setford admitted that nerves and intimidation played a factor in the loss.

"They're the world champions and you don't become world champions by being slouches," he said. "We didn't have our best game tonight, but at the same time, they're the world champions and we saw why tonight."

Several New Zealand players come to North America to play in the summer because it coincides with their winter. After the tour through Canada is completed, four of them will suit up for the Gators, who are ranked fourth amongst North American club teams by the International Softball Congress.

"This is the fifth or sixth time we've come to Ontario and it's because of the way we've been hosted and treated," Sorenson said. "We've played good competition here and it's a great place for us to come to. I think Canada and New Zealand are closely aligned in terms of being similar, Commonwealth countries."
