Islanders help Chiefs win own tournament

ORIGINAL STORY

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – Two West Prince athletes continue to be impact players with Six Nations Hill United Chiefs.

Mitch Hardy and Jeff Ellsworth, who helped the Chiefs win the International Softball Congress (ISC) men’s world tournament last summer, helped them win their own tournament last weekend in St. Catharines, Ont.

The Chiefs were trailing Argentina by a run in the bottom of the seventh inning of the championship final of the Hill United Snapper Shootout on Sunday, when Ellsworth hit a one-out double. Nick Shailes followed with a two-run homer to give the Chiefs the win.

Hardy picked up a complete-game win (9-0) against the New York Swashbucklers in the round robin, and had the Chiefs leading the New York Gremlins 8-5 in the semifinals before being relieved.

The Chiefs went 3-0 (won-lost) in the round robin, starting off with a tight 8-7 win against New Zealand. They defeated the Toronto Gators 8-2 in five innings in the quarter-finals, scored an 12-5 semifinal win against the Gremlins in six innings and finished off with a come-from-behind win over Argentina.

Argentina made it to the final with a semifinal victory over New Zealand.

Ellsworth hit 10-for-17 with four home runs in the tournament. He hit two homers in the quarter-final; was 3-for-3 with a walk in the semifinal, and was 2-for-4 with the tying run in the final.

 Report from NZSoftball

The Golden Homes Black Sox softball team have lost their first game of their Canadian tour with a 7-8 scoreline against a powerful local team at the Hill United Shootout in St Catharines, Ontario.

The Hill United side jumped out to an early two run lead with a home run from Canadian international Jason Elsworth followed by some uncharacteristic defensive errors which led to the internationally stacked home team gaining a 7-1 lead in the fourth innings.

Top Australian pitcher, Adam Folkard dominated the Black Sox hitters early but was rocked in the third innings by Canterbury veteran Stephen Ratu hitting a line drive home run over left field as the visitors staged a comeback. Ratu repeated his hitting with another automatic home run in the fifth innings to also score his captain, Nathan Nukunuku who had made base on a walk.

The Black Sox further rocked Folkard who is regarded as the world’s fastest pitcher in the sixth inning with an automatic home run to Jerome Raemaki and another to Thomas Enoka to bring the score to 6-7. Enoka’s home run was followed by another Ratu safe hit, this time a double to centre field to once again score Nukunuku and tie game at 7-7.
