This Week in Fastball - Peter Hallman Memorial

June 25, 2014

Kitchener, ON

Kitchener Ontario
June 25 2014

Hot and sunny on Saturday....and sunny and hot on Sunday, perfect
fastpitch tournament weather. The diamonds were in great shape, the
red clay, the white lines, the green grass of the best fastball diamonds
in the country and some of the best teams in Canada ready to rocket the
K Masters out of the park....

The first Peter Hallman Memorial Fastpitch tournament disappointed no
one. Great games, only a couple of them lopsided, and a great test for
most of the teams who have qualified to attend the ISCs later this
summer at Peter Hallman Ball Yard. And a good opportunity or a couple
of teams to earn berths into the ISCs as well.

And let's not forget the 3rd team on the field...the great Blue Crew
that UIC Tim Whitelaw put together for this weekend.

But down to the business of fastball....

The Kitchener Hallman Twins won! They went 4 and 0 and beat the
Scarborough Force twice to claim the inaugural Peter Hallman Memorial
Fastpitch Tournament.

The Twins opened with a 2 - 1 victory Saturday morning over the Toronto
Batmen and followed that Saturday afternoon with an 11 - 0 win over the
Shakespeare Falcons.
Those wins were followed Saturday evening with an 10 - 6 win over the
Scarborough Force...tough couple of games for the Skelton's.....leading
to a berth in the Sunday afternoon final.

Other opening scores were Toronto Batmen, 9 to 7 over the Kitchener
Diamond Jaxx of the Kitchener Fastball League. The Diamond Jaxx are the
second Kitchener ISC host club.

Shakespeare Falcons opened Friday nights action with a 2 - 1 win over
the Sweaburg Crush, and the Kitchener Outlaws defeated CPI Heflin
Builders 5 - 0 in the 9pm game Friday evening.

The Falcons continued to win on Saturday morning, 5 - 3 over Wiarton,
last year's ISC II Finalists. The loss to the Twins dropped the Falcons
one bracket and another loss, this time to the Kitchener Outlaws, and
then a loss to the Wellington Sox in the "B" semi final 4 - 3.

The Kitchener Hallman Cubs, beat the Wellington Sox 7 - 2 in their
Saturady opener, then lost a tight game to the Scarborough Force 3 - 0,
rebounded for a 7 - 4 win over the Toronto Batmen.

Other scores from the early rounds include Wiarton 7 to 3 over CPI
/Heflin, a Wiarton 3 - 0 loss to the Toronto Batmen, followed by a
Wiarton loss to Sweaburg 8 - 4

The Wellington Sox followed their loss to the Cubs with a win over the
Diamond Jaxx 14 - 3...but lost to the Outlaws 3 - 0...and relegation to
the "B" single elimination tournament.

In the "B" semi final, Sweaburg Crush beat the Diamond Jaxx 11 - 3, the
Sox beat the Falcons in a close 4 - 3 game...

The Wellington Sox opened up with 4 runs in the top of the first, on 3
walks, an error, a double and a couple singles...RBIs by Jeremy Creedan,
Brian Roote (2), and Todd Uhrig.

Sweaburg picked up 3 in the 4th on a couple of doubles off Todd Uhrig, a
couple of singles and a couple of walks. Adam Martin, Josh Leuszler and
Colin Walsh drove in the Sweaburg runs.

The "A" championship Sunday looked like this..the Hallman Twins
undefeated and in the final, the Scarborough Force in the semi-final at
2 - 1, a loss to the Twins on Saturday night, and the Cubs and Outlaws
to meet, the winner to play the Force.

The Cubs opened the second inning with a single by Allan Phibbbs
followed by a 2 RBI homer by Mike Grant.

Andrew Putnam started for the Cubs, he went 6 strong innings, allowing
one run..in the 3rd to Justin Krulicki, who singled with 2 out. Joe
Triest singled and Jeff Lyons scored Krulicki.

Cubs move on to face the Scarborough Force in what turned out to be a
very tight game, with no scoring until the bottom of the 6th..

With 2 away in the bottom of the 6th, Dave Brownhill reached first on an
error, followed by a triple from Craig Buttar, the only hit off Cub
pitcher Scott Wager.

Wager had 4 Ks and 1 walk for the Cubs in a tough loss.

Skelton went 5 complete, 1 hit, 3Ks and 1 walk, Don Scott was the
winning pitcher, 3 hits, 3 Ks in 2 innings.

It might have been interesting to see the Twins vs the Cubs and it
almost happened, but the Twins and the Force met at 1pm for the
tournament championship

Don Scott for the Force, Paul Koert for the Twins.

The Twins struck first, in the 3rd...Matt Greer leading off and batting
7th in the order homered. It was the first hit off Don Scott, the first
hit of the ball game.

In the 5th....Scarborough got on board a lead off walk to Rowan Lam, a
sacrifice bunt from Andrew Scott, and Nick Dambrosio, a "force" for the
Force at 2nd base, singles to score Lam. Back to the top of the order,
with Dambrosio at 2nd, Dave Brownhill singles to score Dambrosio...

No score in the 6th for either squad, and Ian Fehrman leads off the
bottom of the 7th with a solo shot...score tied at 2...and extra
innings...and the ITB rule in effect, a runner on second...for the
Force, a nice sacrifice bunt from Craig Buttar moves Brownhill to 3rd.
Ben Wideman pops up to first, and Andy Skelton pops up to short.

...Big Bullet Dodged...by the Twins

Leading off the 8th, Matt Greer is on 2nd, (ITB), and two quick outs, a
fly out to centre field does not move Greer. Will Fehrman Ks. and back
to the top of the order, left fielder Jessie Taws, doubles to the centre
field fence, Greer scores....and the Twins win...3 - 2 in 8
innings...the first Peter Hallman Memorial Fastball Tournament Champs,
the home town Kitchener Hallman Twins...

The Hallman Twins next tournament is in Jarvis this weekend...they open
the tournament with a game against the touring Argentina team on Diamond
2 in Jarvis, at 7pm.

Argentina is also in Kitchener's Budd Park on Thursday night this week
for a couple of games against KFL teams...

See you at the Ball Yard, in Jarvis....
