OIWFA Launches Three New Initiatives for 2014 Season

(Guelph, ON) Ontario Intercollegiate Women’s Fastpitch Association (OIWFA) has launched three new initiatives the 12 team league will take part in for the 2014 season. With a number of OIWFA schools launching their own awareness days/games for particular causes  in recent history and making them extremely successful, the decision to make a league wide initiative was not a difficult one.

On September 20th, OIWFA teams will take a united stance against breast cancer by presenting “Pink Day in the Park.” Launched in 2009 at the Canadian Collegiate Softball Association National Championships in Kitchener, the OIWFA is committed to the ongoing battle against breast cancer. In 2013, it was estimated that 23,800 women and 200 men in Canada were diagnosed with the disease. OIWFA teams will take on their own way of supporting the fight against breast cancer by dawning some form of pink apparel on their uniforms on September 20th as well as collecting any donations towards the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. On October 10th, the OIWFA will once again take a united stance in partnering with You Can Play. You Can Play is dedicated to ensuring equality, respect and safety for all athletes, without regard to sexual orientation. At the 2012 OIWFA Championships, the OIWFA became the first Canadian University sport to make its position against homophobia in sport (story available here). Teams will again participate by sporting YCP badges, shirts, and Pride paraphernalia. For more information on You Can Play, please visit http://youcanplayproject.org/

On October 17-19, the top eight OIWFA teams will once again converge in London, Ontario for the OIWFA Provincial Championships which will be streamed live online with AirItMedia and the voices of the OIWFA, Ball Park Radio. Over the past three seasons, these Championships have been streamed online with over 3000 unique viewers across three different continents.

With the launch of three important initiatives to the OIWFA, we are now calling on Presenting Sponsors to cover associated costs. The OIWFA remains a self-funded sport, receiving no recognition as an official sport and fees paid by student athletes. Partnerships associated with the OIWFA help offset the financial burden to the student athlete. To see how you can be involved, please click here or visit www.oiwfa.org
