The 2nd Annual Kernaghan Cup is ready to roll!  This year will see 17 teams converge on the Grafton Ball Diamonds in 3 days of great, competitive fastball on July 18th to 20th.  Last year saw a hugely successful tournament with FDC Belleville being crowned the Ladies Champions while the Oshawa Ravens took home the Mens Championship.

The Community Sports and Events Committee, established last year, has worked very hard this past year to ensure that there is another successful tournament this year.  Tournament organizers David Harnden, Rory Gill, and Jen Keller-Nelson extend a huge thank you to Alex “Curly” Rutherford for all of his help last year in launching the new tournament.

The teams confirmed this year are again from all over Ontario.  Competing in the womens division: Grafton, Colborne Free Spirits, Cobourg Midget Angels, Slyderz from Toronto, Pickering Lions, Whitby Boston Pizza, Curve Lake, and Curve Lake Gimaakwewag.  Injuries have prevented FDC Belleville from attending to defend their title.  The mens division is represented by Dundonald Diamondbacks, Grafton Jays, Oliver Excavating, Oshawa Wranglers, Glanworth Gators, Durham Bulls (defending champions), Davis Plumbing – Kingston, and The Lakes from Fenelon Falls.

Competition begins Friday night with 4 games.  At 6:30 the Dundonald Diamondbacks will face off against the Grafton Jays while the Grafton Ladies will take on the Cobourg Midgets.  Following at 8:15 will be the Cobourg Bantams playing Oliver Excavating on Diamond 1 while the Oshawa Wranglers will take on the Glanworth Gators.

The proceeds from last years and upcoming tournaments are being turned back into the community with most emphasis on the local sports organizations, Grafton Minor Ball and Grafton Minor Hockey.  In addition, with the revenue generated Diamonds 1 and 2 will be resurfaced and upgraded in time for the 2015 Kernaghan Cup.
