Softball Canada Announces 2014 Hall of Fame Inductees

Softball Canada Announces 2014 Hall of Fame Inductees


(Ottawa, ON) Softball Canada is pleased to announce that Ron Cooke (Official, New Brunswick), Frank Hughes (Official, Prince Edward Island), Donald R. MacDonald (Builder, Nova Scotia), Nancy Morrison (Official, New Brunswick), and Kevin Quinn (Builder, Prince Edward Island) will be inducted into the Softball Canada Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will take place on November 15, 2014 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island at Softball Canada’s Annual General Meeting.
 
Ron Cooke (St. John, NB) was a very successful umpire who worked four Canadian Championships (Senior Men’s in 1978 and 1988; Senior Women’s in 1980 and 1983) and supervised 11 others as an Umpire-in-Chief or Deputy Umpire-in-Chief. He earned his Level V designation in 1988 and his International Softball Federation (ISF) certification the following year before attending the 1991 Pan American Games in Cuba as an on-field official, where he worked the bronze medal game due to the fact Canada was playing in the Gold medal game. In addition to his accomplishments on the field, Ron also served as an instructor at numerous umpire clinics locally, provincially and regionally, and was inducted to Softball New Brunswick’s Hall of Fame in 2006.
 
Frank Hughes (Charlottetown, PEI) started umpiring at the age of 13 and first registered as a Softball Canada umpire in 1977. He umpired at four Canadian Championships before obtaining his Level V certification in 1991, and served as an Umpire-in-Chief or Deputy Umpire-in-Chief at four other Championships. He was also a member of Softball PEI’s executive for over 20 years, holding several positions such as Ladies Director, Umpire-in-Chief, Treasurer and President. Frank was a big contributor to the development of umpires in Prince Edward Island by organizing numerous umpire clinics, and was also frequently involved with local host committees for Canadian Championships in the area. Sadly, Frank passed away on June 24th, 2012.
 
Donald R. MacDonald (Antigonish, NS) began his administrative career in softball in 1983 as the President of the Antigonish Guysborough Rural Softball League, and went on to attend nine Softball Canada Annual General Meetings as a voting delegate for Softball Nova Scotia from 1985 to 1993. Throughout that time, he served as the team manager for several Nova Scotia teams at Canadian Championships, as well as the 1989 Canada Games. In 1993, he was elected to Softball Canada’s Board of Directors, a position he held until 2011 after being re-elected several times. Donald R. supervised 17 consecutive Canadian Championships from 1994 to 2010, and was very well-known at softball diamonds throughout the country. During his tenure as a member of the Board of Directors, he played a very active role on several committees, including the Men’s National Team Committee and the Officiating Development Committee.
 
Nancy Morrison (Quispamsis, NB) is a highly regarded softball and basketball official who has been heavily involved in sport since the early 1980’s. After playing softball for several years, she became a certified umpire in 1987 and officiated in three Canadian Championships before receiving her Level V and ISF certification in 1997. From there, she went on to represent Canada as an umpire at numerous international events, including the 1999 Pan American Games, the 2001 ISF Women’s World Championship, the 2003 Olympic Qualifier, and finally the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, where she worked the plate in the semi-final matchup and on the field for the Gold medal game. In addition to all her international accomplishments, Nancy continued to officiate at the national level in both softball and basketball, and was recently inducted to the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame.
 
Kevin Quinn (Charlottetown, PEI) is currently serving as the President of Softball Canada, a position he has held since 2001. His involvement in the sport of softball began at the grassroots level, were he played and coached for several years. After serving as Vice-President and President of local associations around Charlottetown, he spent 12 years as Vice-President of Softball PEI as well 13 years on Softball Canada’s Board of Directors from 1988 to 2001 – and supervised 14 Canadian Championships during that period – prior to being elected as President. Kevin has been instrumental in the development of the majority of Softball Canada’s programs and operations, and has also been heavily involved at the international level by attending several International Softball Federation Congresses and events. He has supervised several major international events and served on numerous technical committees and is currently a Vice President of the Pan American Softball Association (CONPASA).
 
These inductees will join the Softball Canada Hall of Fame at an Induction ceremony which will be held Saturday, November 15, 2014. The ceremony will be held in conjunction with Softball Canada’s Annual General Meeting and Congress in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, which will take place from November 12-15.
