1999 Worlds Champions /Quentin Seeley Remax Fastball League playoffs/All Ontario Native tournament

August 17, 2014

Sudbury, ON

     1999 RELICS CHAMPIONS

As the 28th Annual Lions World Senior Fastball tournament approaches (in 12 days) , I must reflect on the last Sudbury team to win the tournament .It happened in North Bay at the 13th annual tournament .They also as its been since then were called the relics under the coaching/managing direction direction of Ike McDonald .
That year the team was led by fames pitcher Brad Rienguette whom we lost 6 years later to pancreatic/liver cancer . In 1999 Brad at the young age of 49 was at the end of his career . In the championship game that year , Rienguette pitched a five hitter and fanned 7 batters .The Relics squeezed a 2-1 victory over MicKey Finn’s ,It was a pitcher’s duel .Jim Kirkwood this year’s honorary chairperson was named the championship game MVP even though he was lost after the 4th frame due to a broken arm. Tragedy hit the team just a few days later when Srg Rick McDonald was killed in the line of duty .Other members of that winning squad were : Pitou Paquette and Eddie Roy playing this year (both in their 50’s) as well as Mickey Chartrand ,Don Larocque ,Terry Vendatti and Bobby Decosse .Bobby will be playing on another Sudbury team this year ..
Previously the Relics were known as the Braves when they won the 4th annual in 1990 .They were in the finals known as the JB’s for four straight years from ‘86 to ‘90 .
Don’t forget the Annual Native Fastball Championships coming up this weekend in Parry Island First Nation with 32 teams participating.Monday night in Azilda at the Rick McDonald Memorial Sports Complex , the Quentin Seeley Remax Fastball League first round playoffs continue .In the opener at 7 pm the 1st place Garson Hounds (2-0-0) take on the 3rd place Panthers (0-1-1) while in the knight cap at 9pm the 2nd place Dog House (1-1-0) face the 4th place Aquatech North Stars (0-1-1) .
In the playoffs or the tournaments come out and see some fine ball playing where these players young or old will demonstrate their hitting catching or pitching abilities .
