Three Atlantic Canadians Join Softball Canada Hall of Fame

(Ottawa, ON) - Softball Canada is pleased to announce that Wayne Brown, Ivan Hapgood and Billy Windsor will be inducted into the Softball Canada Hall of Fame in recognition for their contribution and excellence in the sport of softball across the country.

Wayne Brown (Official, Fredericton, New Brunswick) was Deputy Umpire in Chief with Softball Canada from 1986-1994 before taking over the National Director of Umpires portfolio, a position he held until his retirement in 2004. He also held the position of ISF North American Umpire in Chief from 1995 to 2005. In addition to receiving countless umpiring and supervisory assignments both nationally and internationally, Wayne was instrumental in creating outstanding resources and programming, including the Blue Convention, that have made the Canadian umpiring program the envy of the World.

Ivan Hapgood (Builder, Arnold’s Cove, Newfoundland) served for 23 years on the Board of Softball Newfoundland and Labrador including 4 terms as President. He went on to serve as a Director with Softball Canada for 4 years (2000-2004). His many contributions include active participation as an umpire, coach, and various supervisory assignments at Canadian Championships. Ivan also played an integral role in hosting the 1994 ISF Women’s World Championship and 1997 ISF Junior Men’s World Championship in St. John’s.

Billy Windsor (Athlete, Mount Pearl, Newfoundland) had a stellar career with Newfoundland teams competing at Canadian Championships, beginning in 1983 and continuing to 1995. At the 1984 Junior nationals he led his team to a silver medal while garnering top batter and all-star outfielder recognition.  He followed that up with another all-star award at his first Senior nationals in 1985 and was honoured the following year with an invitation to try out for the National Team program. A number of other honours followed, highlighted by a silver medal at the 1995 Canadian Championship held in St. John’s.

The three Atlantic Canadians will join the select group of Canadians who have had this honour bestowed upon them at the Induction ceremony to be held Saturday, November 11, 2006. The ceremony is held in conjunction with Softball Canada’s Annual Meeting in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
