Durham softball wraps up their US road trip

OCAA Women’s Fastball – Exhibition Series

Game One – Monroe defeated Durham 11-7

Game Two – Monroe defeated Durham 6-3

Game Three – Monroe defeated Durham 6-3

Game Four – Durham defeated Monroe 10-2

ROCHESTER, NY – The Durham College women’s softball team finished their annual preseason road trip to Rochester with a 1-3 record as they played the Monroe Community College Tribunes four times this weekend.

Monroe is annually one of the top softball programs in the NJCAA and last spring was no exception as they finished in fifth place at the national championship. With the Lords seeing their first action of the season, head coach Jim Nemish was pleased with his team’s performance, especially with him having 11 freshmen in the line-up.

“There were a lot of positives from the weekend series with our freshmen adapting to the college game,” said Nemish. “The weekend allowed the coaching staff to identify some areas that need work before we open our season. Overall, it was a good weekend and we got to see everyone in action.”

The Lords are preparing for their OCAA season opener, which is set to take place on Saturday, September 13 in London against the Fanshawe Falcons. Although it is Fanshawe’s first year in OCAA softball, they proved that they have come to play as they beat Mohawk by a combined score of 43-3 in their opening series this weekend.

GAME ONE – Monroe defeated Durham 11-7

Game one of the weekend series could have went either way with the teams combining for 18 runs. With Durham holding a 4-0 lead, Monroe mounted a comeback scoring four runs in the third and five more in the fifth. The Tribunes added some insurance in the sixth inning with a two-run home run.

Durham came close to putting together a comeback of their own, but they left the bases loaded in the seventh inning.

Lydia Kalbfleisch (Moorefield, Ont.) pitched five innings and allowed six runs on eight hits. She was relieved by Sam MacCallum (Whitby, Ont.) who pitched two innings and allowed five runs.

Ashley Black (Waterloo, Ont.), Katrina Gammie (Guelph, Ont.) and Caleigh Coels (Duncan, BC) had the hot stick at the plate as they all went 3-for-4.

GAME TWO: Monroe defeated Durham 6-3

A slow start haunted Durham in game two on Saturday as they allowed five runs in the first two innings. Danielle Crosby (Whitby, Ont.) came into the game in relief and shut the Tribunes down, but the Lords’ offence could only generate three runs at the plate.

Cassidy Gallant (Bowmanville, Ont.), Justine Pike (Whitby, Ont.) and Black had two singles each for Durham in the loss.

GAME THREE – Monroe defeated Durham 6-3

The opening game on Sunday mirrored the result of the day before as Monroe won by a score of 6-3 while jumping on the Lords’ pitching early in the game.

Making her 2014 debut on the mound, Black allowed all six runs in five innings of work while striking out five. Kalbfleisch relieved Black and pitched two scoreless innings to close out the game.

The Lords were getting runners on base but were unable to cash them in. When the game was in the books, the Lords left a total of 13 runners on base. Gammie was the Lords’ top hitter as she finished with a single and double while cashing in two runs.

GAME FOUR – Durham defeated Monroe 10-2

Durham was finally able to get in the win column with a big 10-2 victory over the Tribunes. Gammie pitched the complete game allowing two runs on six hits, while fanning six Monroe batters. Gammie, teaming up with her sister Kayla behind the plate, faced only 14 batters after the first inning when Monroe scored its’ only two runs of the game.

Durham’s big inning came in the third as they scored seven runs off of three Monroe pitchers. After taking a 9-2 lead, Gammie (Katrina) put the game on ice with a monster solo shot to left field that cleared the fence by at least 50 feet, marking her first college home-run. The Lords would finish with 10 runs and 11 hits in the game, showing the offensive potential that the team is capable of.
