Lords and Humber softball splits their doubleheader

OCAA Women’s Softball
Game One: Durham defeated Humber 5-3
Game Two: Humber defeated Humber 15-11 (nine innings)

OSHAWA, Ont. – When the rain stopped and the clouds cleared, the Durham Lords and Humber Hawks eventually got their OCAA women’s softball doubleheader in on Sunday afternoon. With the teams combining for 34 runs in over five hours of play, they both walked away with wins as they split their doubleheader.

Durham took game one by a score of 5-3 while the Hawks pulled out a 15-11 marathon victory in game two that took nine innings to play. The Lords are now 5-3 on the season, one game back of the Hawks who sit in second place at 7-3.

Game one featured a comeback effort by Durham as they trailed 3-1 after two innings. The Lords would tie the game up with two runs in the third, followed by single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to win by a score of 5-3.

Starting pitcher Lydia Kalbfleisch (Moorefield, Ont.) allowed three runs, all of which were unearned. She finished with two strikeouts while allowing only eight hits to register the win. She also contributed at the plate as she was 2-for-3 with a RBI while Caleigh Coels (Duncan, B.C.) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

In game two, Durham found themselves down early again as they trailed the Hawks 7-0 after the top of the third inning. Durham bats would suddenly come alive as they scored nine runs over the next four innings, taking a 9-8 lead into the top of the seventh. However, the Lords were unable to close out the game as Humber scored on a two-out error to tie the game and send it into extras.

After the teams traded runs in the eighth inning, Humber would post five in the top half of the ninth to take a commanding 15-10 lead. The Lords were only able to manage to score one run in the bottom half of the inning, giving the Hawks their seventh win of the year.

Five Lords had a multi-hit game including Katrina Gammie (Guelph, Ont.), Ashley Black (Waterloo, Ont.), Kayla Gammie (Guelph, Ont.), Courtney Hobbs (Oshawa, Ont.) and Lindsey Geffros (Waterloo, Ont.).

Julian Catalino was 4-for-5 at the plate for Humber with four RBI and two runs scored.

The Lords next action is on Wednesday, September 24 when they host the Mohawk Mountaineers. First pitch for the single game is at 6:30 p.m.
