A Piece of Nova Scotia Fastball History

March 29, 2015

Halifax, NS

Thanks to Al Hollingsworth:

Here's a piece of softball history. In 1957 I was a member of the Nova scotia Light and Power intermediate softball team. We had won the Nova Scotia title and were to face Minto, BB in a Maritime final. A best of three to be played on the Halifax Commons. When Minto arrived, they took to the field wearing gloves. Only our catcher and firstbaseman were permitted to wear a glove. Needless to say, Minto won the first game, catching just about everything we hit. After that game I approached Jack Gray, provincial president and asked him to level the plying field. As he had no jurisdiction over Minto, he gave us permission to don gloves. Gloves I borrowed from a nearby minor ball team that had just finished up on a nearby diamond. We won the nest two games and were crowned Maritime champs. The nest year NS adopted the glove rule and the rest is history.
