Canada Defeats Host Mexico at Pan Am Championships

(HERMOSILLO - Mexico) -  A fun filled, party like atmosphere was present among the capacity crowd in the Hermosillo Softball Stadium as Team Canada improved its record to 3-2 tonight with a 2-0 victory over the host squad from Mexico at the Pan American Softball Championship.

Canada started the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd inning when right fielder Derek Mayson (North Vancouver, BC) hit a towering blast over the scoreboard in right center field. "It was important to get runs early" noted Mayson.  "The home run helped spark the team and give us a bit more focus for the game”.

The lead was increased to 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning when Pat Mackintosh (Saskatoon, SK) led off with a walk. After a Sean O’Brien (Kitchener, ON) strikeout, Mackintosh moved to second on a groundout by Ian Fehrman (Townsend, ON). Kevin Schellenberg (Squamish, BC) then lined a single up the middle to score Mackintosh. The inning ended when Schellenberg was thrown out at 2ndtrying to stretch the hit into a double.

Canada finished with 5 hits, 2 by lead off hitter Ryan Wolfe (London, ON).

Mexico only managed 2 hits off the Canadian combo of Nick Underhill (Campbell River, BC) and Frank Cox (Owen Sound, ON). Underhill was credited with the win striking out 9 while walking 2 in five and one third innings of work. Cox entered the game with two runners on base in the sixth inning and managed to end the Mexican threat.  Cox was perfect on the mound striking out 3 in one and two third innings of work.

Panfilio Valdez took the loss for Mexico giving up 5 hits, striking out 2 and walking 1 in 6 innings of work.

With the win, Canada moves to third place behind the Bahamas (3-1) and Venezuela (3-0).  Canada resumes play tomorrow morning against Argentina (3-3) with an evening game against the Virgin Island (0-4).
