Toronto, ON

The Ontario Intercollegiate Women's Fastpitch Association was recognized last night at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto by the You Can Play Project for the associations continued efforts toward creating a safe competitive arena of competition for its student-athletes over the last four years.

Brian Kitts, co-founder of You Can Play acknowledged the work of the OIWFA to ensure all athletes in the OIWFA are treated equally across 12 Ontario Universities, regardless of sexual orientation. Staged in front of the most famous sporting trophy in the world, the Stanley Cup, guests watched the OIWFA You Can Play video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9CAArcy7SA) and applauded the OIWFA for the number of athletes who have come out since this campaign began.

You Can Play also noted that the OIWFA was the first sport to take a unified stance against homophobia in its competition.

"It was an absolute honour to be recognized on behalf of our entire association and the impact our coaches and athletes have had on this campaign" said OIWFA President Matt Allen. "I'm incredibly proud after hearing the comments at this event on how turn-key this idea was and how much of a difference it can have for young athletes struggling with their sexuality" Allen added.

In 2014, the OIWFA launched a full You Can Play day in its regular season, read more about that here.
