2015 Pan American Games – Men’s Softball Day 1 Summary

(Ajax, ON) It was a very hot and sunny day on the first day of men’s softball competition at the brand new President’s Choice Ballpark in Ajax, Ontario.

United States 10 vs. Dominican Republic 0

The Men’s Softball Competition at the 2015 Pan American Games kicked off with a game between the Dominican Republic – one of the biggest surprise teams from last week’s WBSC Men’s World Softball Championship – and the United States. The Americans opened the scoring in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly in foul territory in right field by Josh Johnson and scored another run in the fourth when Tony Macha tripled to right field and scored on a sacrifice fly to left Kris Bogach. In the fifth, Team USA scored two more runs and exploded for six more in the top of the sixth highlighted by a bases loaded triple by Marcus Tan as the United States won 10-0. Mancha fired a no-hitter for the Americans, allowing only one walk and striking out eight.

Argentina 3 vs. Venezuela 0

Argentina got things going early in the bottom of the first as Huemul Mata singled and advanced to second on a passed ball before scoring on a single to left by Bruno Motroni. In the third, Motroni was at it again as he smashed a two-run double over the centerfielder’s head to give Argentina a 3-0 lead. In the meantime, Argentinean pitcher Manuel Godoy kept the Venezuelan bats silent through five innings, allowing only a two-out single by Iran Paez in the third. Venezuela opened the sixth with a pair of singles, forcing Godoy from the game as Juan Potolocchio took over in the pitcher’s circle. An illegal pitch advanced the runners to second and third, but Potolocchio struck out the next three batters to end the threat, and struck out the side in the seventh to end the game.

Canada 10 vs. Mexico 5

The Canadian bats picked up right where they left off from last week’s WBSC Men’s World Softball Championship, as Andy Skelton hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the second. After Mexico scored one run on a sacrifice fly by Edgar Lopez in the third, Canada added three runs on a passed ball and a two-run single by Brandon Horn. The Mexicans scored another run on an error in the third and seemed to score a third run, but the runner was called out on an appeal play on a tag up at third. Team Canada went on to add three more runs on a two-run single by Steve Mullaley and an error to take an 8-2 lead. Mexico made things interesting with three runs in the top half of the sixth highlighted by a two-run triple by Ismael Pena, but Canada put the game away on an RBI triple by Mullaley who scored on a single by Fehrman to make the final score 10-5.
